Adopted by the UN and slated for inclusion in 49 CFR and other regulatory standards, the regulation will have a significant impact on the lithium battery industry. Beginning January 2020, manufacturers and distributors of lithium cells and batteries must make available a lithium battery test summary document to everyone in the supply chain.

CHEMTREC®, the world’s leading source of 24/7 call center support and information during hazardous materials incidents, has partnered with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) to offer the CHEMTREC HELP (Hazmat Emergency Local Preparedness) Award. Through this program, two volunteer fire departments will be awarded $7,500 to help enhance their response capabilities and increase local readiness to respond to and prepare for hazardous materials incidents.

CHEMTREC®, a service of the American Chemistry Council (ACC), is proud to announce its first International Hazmat Summit. The event will be held at the Westin Houston Memorial City in Houston, Texas on October 29 – 31, 2019. “Our goal is to provide a one-of-a-kind forum for those involved in the safe transportation, handling, and use of hazardous materials, including shippers, carriers, and emergency and spill clean-up responders,” said Chief Executive of CHEMTREC John Modine.

More and more products are fueled by lithium batteries. As their use increases, so does the frequency of safety incidents during shipment. In fact, the Federal Aviation Administration reported a significant jump in lithium battery incidents aboard planes and in airports—from just 16 incidents in 2015 up to 46 in 2017. Is your organization compliant with these evolving lithium battery shipping regulations? If not, you are at risk for penalties and fines that could amount to thousands of dollars per violation.
